Understanding the Various Types of Paint Finishes
What many people forget about, when it comes time to paint their Spencer home, is that there is more to it than finding the right painter, although that is important too. In fact, even selecting the right paint is about more than selecting a color that you like.
Interior painting is about knowing the options that you have for paint finishes and making an informed decision. Make the wrong choice and you could end up regretting it, until you get the opportunity to repaint the walls.
What Paint Finish is Right for What Room?
You may simply have a preference based on the overall look, but wise homeowners know that the type of paint finish should pair well with the type of room, as well as the way in which the room will be used.
- Matte is the most basic of paints with no sheen. That makes it ideal for walls that you would rather be more background. However, it is not good for places where walls can get easily marked, damp or touched with greasy fingers.
- Matte enamel has a lot of similar traits to matte but is more durable. So, it is easier to clean but still not the perfect fit for spaces like the bathroom or kitchen.
- Satin has a soft sheen putting it right between matte and gloss. It does a good job of concealing blemishes and is fairly easy to maintain, but still too much shine for those who like matte.
- Eggshell is, as the name would imply, a finish that has both a smoothness and a subtle shine. The other selling point is that it provides a lot of coverage with a single coat, making it a cost-effective option.
- Semi-gloss is often the type of paint finish reserved for trim work. While not as shiny as gloss, it has shine and is easy to clean with soap and water.
- Gloss is the opposite of matte and has the most amount of sheen. If you don’t mind a shine to the walls, this is a good choice especially since it handles crayons, grease and wear and tear better than any other finish.
